The British Heart Foundation exists to fund research into heart and circulatory diseases, helping to develop better diagnostic techniques, treatments and preventative measures to help people avoid and survive these life-changing conditions.
Today, people who experience heart or circulatory diseases - including heart attacks, stroke and coronary heart disease - can be aided by pacemakers, stents, defibrillators, heart transplants and much more, all because BHF and their supporters have funded critical research.
Who are the British Heart Foundation?
BHF were founded in 1961 to fund extra research into heart and circulatory diseases, specifically into the causes, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of those diseases. They have grown into the leading charity for this kind of research, funding over Β£100 million each year into heart attacks, heart disease, strokes, diabetes and vascular dementia.
This research has a direct impact on the lives of people affected by heart and circulatory diseases. Tools that are now widely implemented across the UK and the world, like valve replacements, pacemakers and portable defibrillators, were partially funded by BHF.
Currently, the charity are funding over 1,000 research projects across the UK. What's more, BHF are influencing government policy to tackle global health inequalities and create a world free from the fear of heart and circulatory diseases.
As well as pioneering research, BHF provide support and care to people affected by heart disease, such as through their Heart Helpline. Anyone living with heart and circulatory diseases can access guidance and advice from clinical experts to help them through that tough time.
How can you help?
BHF's research and services rely on charitable donations and the tireless work of volunteers, so fundraising through outdoor events and experiences is a vital contribution to their work. In return for your commitment to fundraising, BHF will support your training for the event and cheer you on there too!
The iconic London to Brighton Bike Ride is one of BHF's biggest events, with hundreds of riders cycling 54 miles from capital to coast. This is Europe's oldest charity bike ride and is celebrated with a grand finale at the Brighton beachfront! You can also choose to take part in the London to Brighton Off-road Bike Ride, enjoying a varied and exciting route on dirt tracks and trails!
