Event overview

The race starts in the afternoon, so athletes are encouraged to stay behind and socialise with fellow athletes!

In order to time the start with the high tide, the race will begin in the afternoon.

Due to the tidal flow, the swim leg has a strict cut off time of 1hr 10 mins, and the overall event a cut off of 8.5hrs to ensure everyone finishes in daylight.

The swim uses a 750m swim course (new for 2023), starting next to the imposing statue of Byrhtnoth, celebrating the Saxon Battle of Maldon, and heads out towards Northey Island.

This event has a non-draft legal bike leg that takes athletes out of Maldon and onto the quiet, scenic roads of the Dengie Peninsula through the villages of Latchingdon, Tillingham, Steeple and Mayland.

The run course is a flat 5km loop that heads out and back on the promenade before taking the footpath along the sea wall, and heading back towards race HQ. The last kilometre is completed looping around Promenade Park where spectators will get a great chance to cheer you on. The surface is a mixture of paved roads, grass and gravel track.

Not only will you earn yourself this fabulous medal,  there will also be goodies waiting for you at the finish line!

This event is part of ATW Big East & Maldon Triathlon.

The swim in the river Blackwater is tidal so always a bit of a challenge in one direction but usually has a nice current assistance in the other. The buoyancy of the salt water is always welcome too! Roslyn M

Superb event. So Unique with a super fast bike course. The swim was total chaos but I loved it :-) great event location, superb event and awesome medal. Nathan

My first ever triathlon and it was such a fun experience. I feel so lucky to have been able to be a part of such a well organized event and because of that I will absolutely be competing in more triathlons! Mitchell T

Lovely races here. The shallow muddy estuary start is a hoot. Salty water is really warm. Anthony G

Great event in a location that was also fantastic for supporters. Really enjoyable Swim/Bike/Run/sections with superb marshals. Justin M

Was such a nice friendly local event I’ll be back next year for sure! Charlotte L

parking is right next to the transition and registration area making it stress free to get your number pack and rack the bike. The race itself was great fun, swimming in an estuary was something a bit different Neill W
