These run-bike-run events are at the longer end of the duathlon spectrum, despite the 'middle distance' label. Involving a 10K run, 60K cycle and final 10K run, there's no doubt that they offer a proper test of your fitness and stamina.
A fair reckoning is that a middle distance duathlon will take between three and five hours to complete, though this will depend on whether your event is a road or off-road version.
There are a wide variety on offer, like the Castle Race Series events that take place in historic grounds across the UK and in Europe, involving a variety of tarmac and trails. As middle distance duathlons are among the most popular around, there are more options for you to choose from.
An option that's available for many duathlons is competing as part of a relay team, where three competitors divide the sections between them. This allows both first time duathletes to get acquainted with the format and seasoned competitors to race their section. Different prize categories are available for these racers as they'll usually be flying past regular duathletes!
The kit needed for a duathlon is relatively simple, at least compared to a triathlon:
- A bike (which will depend on whether you are on or off-road)
- A helmet (you won't be allowed to compete without one)
- A race belt (to hold your number and any nutrition)
- Either a race suit or cycling shorts
- Running shoes
