Are you ready for the Exmoor Perambulation?
The full 30-mile route around the original boundary of the Royal Forest of Exmoor is a historic event that traces its origins back to the time of Edward I.
This is one of the most challenging walks in the Exmoor annual calendar and now offers entries for runners too. You’ll get a great feeling about taking part as you will also be participating in the continuation of Exmoor’s rich history.
Completing the full Perambulation is a major achievement, but you also have the half-distance option, which starts with the main event but ends at Picked Stones Lane. Here you’ll be greeted by the ‘Miles‘ tea stop to enjoy a brew while waiting for the complimentary mini bus service back to Pinkery.
Whichever version you choose (and you don’t have to make up your mind until the day of the event), training is highly recommended before you tackle the main event, but the reward is immersion in the natural environment, heritage and spectacular scenery of Exmoor National Park.
Walk or run, the choice is yours. Come and be a part of this wonderful event’s long history. See you on the start line!

The 30-mile route follows the original boundary of the Royal Forest of Exmoor. You’ll walk or run through inspiring, stunning and remote areas of the national park, taking away some truly amazing memories. This event is a test of your navigation and long distance walking or running abilities. The route is not way-marked but a route map, description and GPX files are available for you plot the route onto your Ordnance Survey map (Exmoor OL9 1:25000) and follow on a suitable GPS device.
One great aspect of this event is that much of the route is accessible only with permission of the landowners concerned – so you’ll access parts of the National Park not normally open to the public. Please remember to keep strictly to the route provided, which has been agreed with the landowners – detailed instructions, maps and GPX files are available to help you navigate the sections which do not follow public rights of way and the route in its entirety.
You can choose whether to tackle the full route or the half route on the day! All entrants head out on the first 15 miles.
If you want to complete the full route of 30 miles, you will need to be leaving Checkpoint 5b by the cut-off time of 13:00.

All the Tribe members at the checkpoints were brilliant. Paul B
I had a great time and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a well organised challenge. Robin O
...a superlative event - a tough 30 mile walk over remote parts of Exmoor. Stunning landscapes, hills to climb, streams to ford, paths to navigate, fantastic friendly volunteers, loved it. A brilliant and fun day. Huge thanks Dan and all the team and to the tribe volunteers. Margaret G
As an Australian visitor I was made to feel very welcome by the team and participants. Combing the Man vs Moor with the Exmoor Perambulation made the weekend excellent value. The wild swimming at Pinkery Pond was a highlight. Highly recommended. John L
We had a brilliant time at the Perambulation. It was really well organised and it was evident how passionate the staff were about the event. All instructions and maps given were extremely clear and lots of support and advice was to hand. Exmoor is really beautiful so we are really greatful to the organisers and land owners for allowing the event to happen and for organising it. We loved our medals and certificate and love that we can use the medal as a table coaster. We will definitely be back next year! Janeve M
Awesome event run by wonderful people, would definitely recommend to anyone to do. Thank you for an amazing day xxxx Anna S
A great challenge for anyone who wants to try self-navigation. Spectacular route and great attention to duty of care by the organizers. Sonia B
Brilliant event, and the Tribe Members were all fantastic - so friendly and encouraging. They went above and beyond keeping my friend back at the finish informed of my progress by radioing checkpoints after she had to retire due to injury, also kept checking on her to make sure she was ok after her injury. The course is tough but that’s part of the beauty of the event - can’t walk around Exmoor without plenty of steep hills! Elizabeth K
What a fantastic event, amazing route, great if you like a bit of self-navigation, the fact that the route wasn't marked made it all the better. Great if you want to explore new parts of Exmoor you wouldn't normally see. Staff were really friendly and encouraging, going to be doing this every year I can. Dan M
This is an incredible annual event taking walkers and runners alike across some of the most unspoilt and remote parts if the country that are not accessible to the public at any other time of the year. You will be greeted by the friendliest of marshals who all want you to have a good time and enjoy watching you achieve your goals. The event is incredibly well organised and everyone has a good time getting away from the realities of life, even if only for a day. Robert S
