Event overview

This event utilises the longest standard-gauge steam railway line in the UK!

Steaming to the Coast will see entrants ride the steam train along this beautiful heritage line from the coastal town of Minehead to the lovely village of Bishops Lydeard, which is located at the foot of the stunning Quantock Hills National Landscape.

There are three distances to choose from: 11km, 11.5 miles or a full marathon. Entrants will take the train from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard taking in the beautiful West Somerset countryside.

Marathoners will disembark at Bishops Lydeard to start their 26.2 mile trail run back to Minehead, cheered on by the 11.5 mile and 11km entrants. 11.5-mile and 11km entrants will then ride the train back to their start points of either Williton or Washford before running back to Minehead (the gateway to Exmoor National Park) and finishing outside Minehead Station.

Once entries with the steam train included sell out, there will be “under your own steam” entries available for you to make your own way to the start lines at a discounted rate.

After finishing this epic challenge you’ll definitely have earned a fish and chip supper washed down with a pint of Somerset cider!

Timetable

  • 10:15 | Marathon entrants will disembark at Bishops Lydeard and start on mass on the platform next to the steam train.
  • 11:30 | 11.5 mile - Entrants for this distance will ride the train back to Williton and start on the platform od this station next to the train.
  • 12:15 | 11km - Entrants for this distance will ride the train back to Washford and start on the Steam Coast Trail that parallels the train line.

Hopefully, based on the start times, entrants will arrive at the finish much closer together, creating the perfect opportunity to support each other and cheer everyone across the finish line.

This was without a doubt the best race that I have ever taken part in and my absolute favourite race of all time! It was well organised, great attention to detail, super friendly and helpful race directors, organisers and marshals. The aid stations were very well stocked (the stout chocolate cake was amazing) and it was just overall a fantastic event. The train ride to the start points made for a very relaxed start and the countryside and views that we had on the way back to Minehead was just superb. I honestly can't find anything bad to say and would highly recommend... I will definitely be back again! Angela D

Amazing event, I don’t do much trail running but I can’t wait for the 2025 event. Such a great day from start to finish. The runs starting on the sound of the steam trains whistle is a unique feature. The course is well marked out and the Marshalls are always happy to see you. Steve P

Absolutely loved this race! So well organised and sign posted. Friendly marshalls well stocked aid stations. Beautiful views as we were so lucky with the weather. Dan and his team made this a very stress free run! Samantha C

One of the most enjoyable runs I have participated in, beautiful route through Somerset countryside and great weather. Mark W
