The ‘Yarnbury Yomp’ is a thrilling, but challenging course. An undulating off-road route comprising of public byways, which in areas is likely to be muddy, wet and rutted. The race starts at a location known as Maddington Woods, and the first mile greets eager runners with a moderate but continuous uphill section. After levelling off, runners will pass an area of Salisbury Plain used in the farmyard scenes of the film 1917. Just after mile two, and for approximately half a mile, another moderate uphill section consisting of a chalk and gravel track challenges, before levelling off where there is an opportunity to see far reaching views across Salisbury Plain to the right, and Parsonage Down nature reserve to the left. At the 3 mile point runners approach the area of the ancient Iron Age hill fort of Yarnbury, before turning back on the same track for half a mile, and then turning right and heading back towards the village of Shrewton. All those previous uphill sections reward runners with a fast downhill final mile to the Common. A short road section will take you to the finish. This course is suitable for all levels of runners, and wearing suitable trail running shoes is advisable due to the uneven, wet and muddy ground. We very much hope you enjoy the course, and Shrewton Running Club wish you all the very best of luck!
