Walk the entire length of the Monsal Trail from Bakewell to Buxton, following the route taken by the trains that used to run on the much-missed Midland Railway line between Derby and Manchester.
Beginning at the old Bakewell Railway Station, the walk passes through spectacular Peak District scenery to Blackwell Mill. Along the way, an expert guide with over 30 years experience tells the story of the railway line, from its creation in the 1860s to its closure in the 1960s. It then follows the private road running through the peaceful Wye Dale, before climbing the dale side and crossing the hilltop fields for the final four miles to the finish in the spa town of Buxton.
Both ends of the walk are served by regular buses between Derby and Buxton, with plenty of parking available in Bakewell. At the end of the walk, you can then use the bus to return to Bakewell to collect your car. Bakewell is also served by regular buses from Chesterfield.
Although much of the walk is along a firm and flat trail, the final four miles are cross-country, so a good pair of walking boots are essential. Due to the lack of facilities along much of the route, you are also advised to bring plenty of water and a packed lunch.
