A standard duathlon is one of the most popular and most common variations of this exciting multi-sport, including both road and off-road editions across the UK.
Involving a 10K run, 40K cycle and final 5K run, the term "standard" for this distance belies the endurance challenge that competitors are presented with. While the distances are very accessible for new duathletes, the transitions between them often result in the 'jelly legs' feeling that duathletes and triathletes are so familiar with.
Standard distance duathlons are usually completed in between two and three hours by solo competitors.
An option that's available for many duathlons is competing as part of a relay team, where three competitors divide the sections between them. This allows both first time duathletes to get acquainted with the format and seasoned competitors to race their section. Different prize categories are available for these racers as they'll usually be flying past regular duathletes!
The kit needed for a duathlon is relatively simple, at least compared to a triathlon:
- A bike (which will depend on whether you are on or off-road)
- A helmet (you won't be allowed to compete without one)
- A race belt (to hold your number and any nutrition)
- Either a race suit or cycling shorts
- Running shoes
