While there's a very different atmosphere to an indoor swimming meet from a wild swim in the Highlands, we're advocates of both - they'll get you moving and are best done with other people!
Both indoor and outdoor pools will host the same event types, which are usually 50m, 100m and 200m races of the following strokes:
- Breaststroke
- Backstroke
- Butterfly
- Freestyle
Are there some additional events, including relays, which can range up to 1,500m in distance.
Pool swimming is a fantastic experience in and of its own right, without any association to the great outdoors. Immersing yourself in water and repeating lengths is a fantastic way to keep fit and enjoy some quiet head space at the same time. These events can also be used as training for a multi-disciplinary sport, like a triathlon.
If you are interested in wild swimming, though, then an event in the pool can be a fantastic stepping stone, allowing you to gain confidence in the water in a safe environment before taking the plunge.
