Rivington has a reputation for UFO sightings and the huge radio masts on the top of Winter Hill act as magnet for all things unexplained.
It therefore seems fitting to make the final event of the series a “close encounters” theme. Whilst this may seem a little ‘alien’ to a few of you (see what we did there?) the format is simple. The 10k course is marked with reflective signs and you run with a head torch to light the paths ahead of you. You’ll need off road running shoes as the terrain at Rivington is rough, boggy and rocky, which is difficult even in the daylight! New for 2025, in addition to our famous 10k race, we will also have a brand new Half Marathon distance. There’s also a free kids event with medals for all finishers so bring the family to have some fun before watching you run. Come and join us for the final round of the Petzl Night Runner Series, it’s going to be an EPIC night of strange goings on. The route is fully marked with reflective signs, but you will need a good quality head torch or hand held torch to light the track ahead so you can safely get round the course. The terrain is varied and often very muddy, so road shoes are not adequate. Ensure that you have good quality trail or fell type shoes, with an aggressive tread. As it’s winter, you’ll need warm clothing and we recommend everyone carries or wears a wind or waterproof jacket. The minimum age for both distances is 16yrs on the day, although there is a free 1k event for young children whose parents are taking part in the main race on the night.
